A Little Bit About Our History

Firm sews up outfit sales
(Written by Phil Kresler in the Times Advocate - 1989)

Diane De Bruyn creates a color skirt at Square Up Fashions in San Marcos. The company, which makes square dance and skating costumes, was founded 14 years ago by Alice & Frank Munoz, who spent $2,500 to open in in a garage. Alice Munoz who worked as a seamstress for many years, was asked to create a square dance dress for a square dance shop, Petticoat Junction in Escondido. The dress sold quickly and soon she was given new orders. The couple decided to make it a full-time business and took out a second mortgage on their home to buy fabric. Now the company, which will post $500,000 in sales this year, employs 15 people at its 5,000-square-foot factory. Its blouses, petticoats, skirts and scarf slides are sold around the world. The company ships about 25,000 pieces a year, and Frank Munoz said Square Up expanded into restaurant uniforms this year. "We're growing by leaps and bounds," said Munoz.
