Petticoat Guide: How to Pick The Perfect Petticoat for Every Occasion
How to pick the perfect petticoat. When buying a petticoat here are some things to consider.
- Fullness
- Fit
- Length
- Fabric Type
- Storage
Fullness
The fullness, or how much the petticoat stands out, has everything to do with how many yards are in the petticoat. We measure all our petticoats in the bottom tier only, so if you order a 50 yard petticoat, it will have 50 running yards of fabric in just the bottom tier. All of the skirts and outfits on our website, are pictured using a #1110 petticoat in the 50 yard fullness, just to give you an example of how this petticoat will hold out your skirt. The fabric type determines the cost, fullness, and feel of the petticoat. Some petticoats are very soft to the touch and others can be a bit stiff.
Fit
Most slip tops are made of a durable, washable poly-cotton fabric. Our waistbands are resting at 24", stretching out to 52" at full stretch. There is a 3/4" elastic encased in waistband and we have added a drawstring to cinch up the waist for a better fit. We can add girth to the petticoat top for larger sizes; and additional 12" is an additional $15 making the max stretch 64".
Length
Our petticoats are offered on 2 lengths; short ( 18"-21" ) or long ( 21'- 24" ) All petticoat when ordered, will arrive at the shorter length ( 18" for short or 21" for long ) and are all adjustable up to 3 " longer than what you see. Changing the adjustable slip length is made easy for you to do. The waistband stays where it is and the 3 tucks below it, hold extra tucks of fabric waiting to be released. By simply pulling a thread on one of the tucks , you can drop the slip to the next length, one inch at a time. These tucks, once released, make the petticoat longer, 1" at a time. This adjustment is longer only, and does not go back to being at the shorter length again.
How to Adjust the Length of Your Petticoat
Turn the petticoat inside out, so you are looking at the inside of it. Find the back-seam of the petticoat and locate the 3 tucks that are below the waistband. To the left of the back seam on one of these tucks, you will see a curve in the stitch, where they started sewing the tuck. Snip this thread, at the beginning of the curve (towards the edge of the tuck) and go to the top of the tuck and try to tug at the thread. It should release the stitch to the right and open up the tuck, revealing an extra inch of fabric that allows the petticoat to be lengthened 1". If the stitch does not release, try to clip another stitch or two and try to tug at the thread again. It is only one single thread and should release easily from left to right. Repeat as necessary to take out one or two tucks. Each tuck removed will lengthen the petticoat 1" and there are a total of 3" that can be lengthened.
